What Is Glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine (γ-Glu-Cys-Gly). It is synthesised in virtually every cell in the human body and is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant. Glutathione exists in two forms: reduced (GSH, the active antioxidant form) and oxidised (GSSG), with the ratio of GSH to GSSG serving as a key indicator of cellular oxidative stress.

Levels decline with age, heavy exercise, alcohol consumption, chronic illness, and environmental toxin exposure. This has made glutathione repletion a target in fields ranging from sports medicine and aesthetics to oncology support and liver disease research.
